Founded in 1681, Alamos is a small Colonial village loaded with history. Set at 1,400 feet above sea-level in the western foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Alamos enjoys a half tropical/half desert ambiance. Its surrounding micro eco-system serves as a cross-over zone between species native to both northern and southern regions.

Much of Alamos today remains in its 18th Century splendor full of Andalusian style architecture. In November 2000, then President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, declared 188 Colonial structures in Alamos as National Historic Monuments.

Nearby, the 200,000 acre Reserve for the Protection of Flora & Fauna Sierra de Alamos - Rio Cuchujaqui is home to over 500 species of spectacular migrating and indigenous birds, including wild parrots, Roseate Spoonbills, McCaws and Trogansand.

If the town square reminds you of a movie you have seen it is because it was probably used as a movie set. If a movie has not been filmed there, one probably should be.

Alamos is a wonderful stop off place enroute to or from the Copper Canyon.

Besides bus service from nearby Navojoa, Alamos is an easy day's drive from the Arizona/Sonora border on well-kept toll highways.
