Prior to the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, Ciudad Juarez was known as "El Paso del Norte" due to its geographic characteristics that enabled the Conquistadores to continue the "Camino Real" into the vast area that reached present-day Northern California.

After the Treaty of Guadalupe fixed the US/Mexico border using the Rio Grande east to the Gulf of Mexico, the settlement on the southern bank of the river continued to be an important stop on the trade route.

Today, across from El Paso, Texas, Ciudad Juarez is one of the largest cities along the US-Mexico border. Its economy is centered around a steel mill built in the early part of this century and the normal trade that evolves from the border crossings.
