Its name derives from Black Warrior - the name of a whaling ship that beached along the lagoon next to Guerrero Negro. The town's economy centers around the vast salt deposits that are mined to the south. In the winter, Guerrero Negro transforms into a whale watchers haven as this is where the Gray whale pods migrate for the cows to bear their calves. While there, the whales are playful and plentiful thanks to the conservation policy set when these cavorting mammals were close to extinction.
